so, Rachel's trying to extort me for half the cleaning deposit

Rogi Riverstone to Rachel, (bcc:Paul)

I have 2 witnesses to the fact that I hired a cleaning person: Paul
Ingles and Megan Kamerick.

Paul, in addition, HELPED me: sweep, vacuum, mop and oil the floors.

I have half a dozen witnesses to the fact that the apartment was clean
when I vacated it. Anybody could have moved in immediately. I even
dusted windowsills, cleaned out the floor furnace (which was dirty
when we moved in), cleaned the refrigerator and the oven. Not one inch
of that apartment -- inside, outside or garage -- was left in
substandard condition.

Paul took pictures, WITH the day's newspaper in each photo; email him
for copies.

Two neighbors: Bert, who lives behind 3829 Thaxton and Tim, who takes
care of Kyoko's place, next door, are witnesses to the fact that the
outside grounds were completely clean, raked, free of debris. BOTH
were VERY impressed with how much better the place looked when I moved
out than it had looked when we moved in.

The only items I left on the property were: cleaning tools & supplies,
a waste basket, a milk crate, a 5 gallon bucket, towels to protect the
floors, items that were on the property when we rented it (some got
thrown away) and a small computer monitor (given the washer -- which
Katherine NAGGED me about -- and other crap on the front porch, back
yard & garage when we moved in, I felt this fair; I had no way to
dispose of it correctly)

You did NOTHING to insure return of the security deposit to you. And
you have not thanked me for working so diligently to restore your
cleaning deposit. You didn't even inspect the apartment before I
vacated it.

I am not responsible for Katherine's mental illness nor substance
abuse issues. In fact, of the 2 of us, it was I who campaigned so
consistantly for return of your deposit to you, MONTHS befrore the
lease was up, in hopes the idiot would start saving the money to give
back to you. You took absolutely no responsibility for the issue of
your deposit.

I have definately worked off well over $300 in labor, in addition to
paying a cleaning person and gathering volunteers to help.

All you did on days you'd "agreed" to help me clean was pick fights
with me, behave insultingly, accuse me of things I'd never do, throw
things around, step on my stuff and treat me like a subhuman.

Don't blame me if you don't get your deposit back; it's not my
responsibility, fault or problem.

I"m DONE with Katherine. It's your money and it's your turn.

"Losing Nineteen" by Judge Lynn C. Toler

You are reading http://livinginthehood.blogspot.com

Just resting in the heat, between bouts of packing today, I channel surfed the TV over to "Divorce Court." I like Lynn Toler. I think she ought to be in politics, rather than daytime TV, but it's not my call.

She made a Brother cry today: called him out for being "tirfling." That's not why he cried, though. She explained to him about jail. Lots of young guys would rather serve a sentenc than go to traffic school, get on probation, pay a fine they can't afford. They say, I can do jail." Well, Judge Toler about lost it. She asked the fellow why young men like him can't understand that when they do jail, Black women do jail, too: the mothers, daughters, wives, girlfriends, babies mommas . . .

She said that, when a Brother goes to jail, it makes all of weaker, that the women need them, that the race can't make it on only the women, carrying the load for the men, too.

Made him bow his head and wipe his eyes.

She mentioned a magazine article she'd written, "Losing Nineteen," on the subject. I found it.

http://www.judgelynn.com/toler-divorce-court/pdf/19losing.pdf

My email to Toler:

Your Honor,

I discovered you through "Divorce Court." It comes on here during my midday nap time.

Once in a while, you get a few seconds on that show in which you get to speak truth to power. I always hope I'll catch you at one of those moments.

I wonder how you got to Harvard. I wonder why you're on daytime TV, instead of running for the US Senate, so I might, one day, vote for you in a Presidential election.

I'm old, sick and tired. My opportunities passed, a long time ago. Oh, I do a bit of community radio. And I try to be useful in whatever town I find myself. But my dreams and goals for myself are small and humble now.

Young women like you give me hope. To see a young woman of color: honest about her struggles with emotional control, about a dysfunctional system that's fed by jaded victim/perpetrators and know you're trying to live a conscious and ethical life gives me courage.

Just because I can't fully be the change I'd like to see in the world doesn't mean the change isn't happening.

And it's good to know it's coming from people who know the terror of mentally unstable parents, stacked decks and a superficial system of "values" that place appearance over substance. It's good to see you, actively resisting the poisons that would wipe us out.

I mean it, though. Maybe when your boys are grown enough, if you still have the spit and the fire, you might consider a career shift to politics.

I suppose you've decided, though, that you can reach more people at risk on daytime TV than you could on Capital Hill.

Thank you for making a living, instead of a killing.

Ayiti: the Cost of Life

You are reading http://livinginthehood.blogspot.com

"Ayiti" is "Haiti."

In this game, try to educate, employ and feed your family of 5, while avoiding cholera, bandits, malaria, dyptheria, ignorance, depression, heat exhaustion and tuburculosis.

It really IS a very fun and challenging game, despite all the above. And it venerates the role of the chicken in healthy, family life, so what else can one want?

AND you can even buy the family a RADIO -- NOT a TV!

It's a bit capitalistic, with middle class values (for instance: folk remedies don't cure; only the clinic and hospital do) and too much emphasis on Christianity. But one can succeed without buying into a lot of the Western emphasis on Protestant work ethic.

The game gives hints, so pay attention and choose wisely.
